What are the hottest IT Jobs for 2013? Whether you’re new to the IT game or a seasoned professional, it’s always good to know what’s hot in the job market. Coming from someone who works with a lot of companies in the Richmond, Northern Virginia, and Washington, D.C. areas, the most popular jobs are in Software/Web Development both in Java and .Net environments. From your small 10 person shops to your large Fortune 1000 companies, hiring managers are always looking for good software developers.
According to Mary Pratt at ComputerWorld, Programming and Application Development is going to be the number one hot IT skill set for 2013.
So you know what’s hot on the market, now what’s going to separate you from the rest of the field? There are certain skill sets and traits that will make you stand out from the other applicants. At the top of the list is the ability to effectively communicate. In addition, being a well-versed, client-facing developer is high on the list. Whether you are working with internal business users or the end client, managers are looking for developers who can think analytically and are comfortable giving presentations on the development of the applications. It goes a long way if you can represent yourself as more than just a heads-down developer. It’s also important that you are experienced in all layers of development and have had exposure to the full SDLC of an application.
There are a wide variety of technologies you can use when working as a Java Developer but the technologies I see most when looking at job descriptions for Java Developers are: J2EE, Spring, Hibernate, JSP, JDBC, ANT, XML, XSLT, Tomcat, JUnit, and Eclipse.
Information technology is a great field to be in and it is a great time to break into a development position or pick up new technologies as you grow your career.
