For my final blog post of 2013 I wanted to piggyback on Wahid Osmani’s previous post. Wahid wrote about the importance of finishing out the year strong. He also mentioned putting in some work on setting yourself up for a quick start in the first quarter of 2014.
One important factor to this is defining clear, achievable goals. I wanted to take this a step further to talk about writing down your goals on paper. This is important for multiple reasons. It forces you to be clear about what it is you want to accomplish in 2014. Do you want to get that promotion? Or maybe buy a house? A new car? Master a new technology? Without being clear about what it is you want to accomplish you can lose sight of your goal. Putting it down on paper is one way to solidify it. Putting down your goals also helps you muffle all the noise and resistance that may come your way. By setting high expectations for yourself it can help you stay focused and not get caught up on the day to day hurdles that may stand in your way to success. Lastly, one of the most important parts of a goal is the overwhelming sense of achievement you feel when you attain your goal. By meeting and exceeding your own expectations, you will feel empowered to continually strive to be better. It also goes a long way in creating self-confidence.
Multiple studies have shown that people who write down their goals on average tend to have a 33% better chance of achieving them. A great quote pertaining to this – “It is only a dream until you write it down, then it becomes a goal.” Just something to think about when planning your path to success for 2014.
