How to Start Your Work Day

I read a recent Forbes article that helped me “re-set” how I start my day. I thought I’d summarize the 14 things you should do at the start of every work day in hopes of helping others “re-set” as well…

  1. Arrive on time – This is a no-brainer, but some don’t realize that showing up late can leave a bad impression.
  2. Take a deep breath – This is necessary after being stuck in a dreadful commute, or after a long weekend of dealing with “home stuff.”  Take a moment to pause.
  3. Take 5 – Give yourself 5 minutes to get settled in. This is your opportunity to set the tone of the day. It’s not uncommon to wake up to a long log of emails that require immediate attention. Just take a moment for yourself and then dive head first into your day.
  4. Start each day with a clean slate – Leave anything that may have happened yesterday behind. Get organized and ready and hit the ground running.
  5. Don’t be moody – This one is directed to those people that are not “morning people.” Have a positive attitude and grab yourself a third cup of coffee. Your first hour will likely set your attitude for the rest of the day. One morning grump can bring down an entire team.  
  6. Organize your day – The first hour of the work day is a perfect time to set your priorities. Don’t get distracted and dive into your email without thinking through the day. Make a to-do list and stick to it.
  7. Be present – This is in regards to one’s mental and physical state. Especially if you’re in a leadership position, it is important to take time to connect with your team members.
  8. Check in with your colleagues – A quick 5-10 minute team huddle can be extremely effective. A short meeting will help everyone share their top goal for the day. By sharing these goals, the odds of achieving them increase substantially.
  9. Keep an organized work space – For a lot of people, it’s difficult to think clearly in clutter. Take some time to keep your desk organized.
  10. Don’t be distracted by your inbox – Most experts agree that you should not check your email first thing in the morning. If you need to, priority scan your email, and reply to those that are most important.
  11. Listen to your voicemail – You don’t want to miss something important.
  12. Place important calls and send urgent emails – If you know you need to get in touch with someone the same day, place the call first thing in the morning. If you wait until the middle of the day, there’s a good chance you won’t hear back before you leave the office.
  13. Take advantage of your cleared head – Many people feel as though their brains function best in the morning, and are more creative and productive. 
  14. Plan a mid-morning break – Assess where you are and revitalize yourself so you can help keep your momentum going.
