It’s Not What You Know, It’s WHO You Know

13 Aug

Today while meeting with a candidate, I found myself saying, “It’s not what you know, it is who you know.” We’ve all heard this once or twice in our lives, but it never really clicked until I was older.

My first occurrence of this oh-so true statement was in college. It was my junior year and I was searching desperately for an internship. I had applied to a few choice companies but with little success. After attending an outing with a couple of friends, I couldn’t help but overhear a conversation regarding computer science. Being in the computer science industry, I had to join in. After some introductions, one of the gentlemen happened to ask if I would be interested in an available internship. All we had in common was a mutual friend that turned into an opportunity for me.

This statement has once again come to light even more for me in the past few weeks. Being a recruiter is all about networking and getting yourself out there. The more people you talk to, the more opportunities become available. The IT world may be a large industry but someone has always been a colleague of someone else’s at one point in time.

Some of the best ways to get on the grid are through social media. People tend to underestimate the power of a simple LinkedIn message or even the use of Twitter. Check out this article and you will understand what I mean.
