Recruiting Millennials

I came across this article and found it extremely interesting. As the make up of the candidate pool changes, it is important for recruiters to change their methods when hiring  “Millennials.”  Here are a few of the techniques from the article which I believe to be most important:

  • Engage in Social Media. Nowadays, almost everyone has a Facebook page or uses Twitter. Simply having a company page gives potential employees a way to discover more information about a company that may not be posted on a website. It can also provide a way for potential hires to interact with current employees and gain more information about the company culture and what it’s like to work there on a day to day basis.
  • Keep selling your company and follow up. The interview process has made a change. The interview process used to be all about the candidate and what skills and experience they could bring to the company. Now, the interview process gives candidates a chance to find out why they should join a company, what their career progression would be, and how their work will make an impact on not only the company, but the world. One of the most important aspects of this tip is to follow up. This is a generation of individuals who have information at their fingertips. It’s important for hiring managers and recruiters to adapt to candidates’ communication styles and respond quickly.
  • Be respectful of all recruits, including the ones that didn’t make the cut. Even in my own job searches, there have been too many times where I have applied to a job and never heard anything ever again. This tip primarily focuses on maintaining good relationships with candidates, regardless of whether or not they get the job. When a candidate has a great recruiting experience, more than likely they will tell their friends and family about it. This in turn can transform your candidates into recruiters.
  • Show what it’s like to work in your office. This is a must for hiring managers. Showing what it’s like to work in your office is a way to promote your company brand and culture. This not only gives candidates a good idea of what the working environment is like, but it also gets them excited about working there. Some companies have found that shooting a “day in the life” video of their offices are bringing the same points across to their potential candidates.
