It is that time of year when most of us have vacations planned. All of those vacation days you have been saving up are finally being put to use! Your trip is booked and you are just counting down the days until your feet hit the sand with a cold drink in your hand. Out of the blue, you get a call from a recruiter who has found your dream job – the job you never thought you would find. It almost seems too good to be true. Then it hits you – your vacation – it is already booked and you can’t get a refund. You are stuck between a rock and a hard place.
This can be a challenging time of year for recruiters and for candidates but this is a situation that happens often – you are not alone! Whether it is a vacation, a family reunion or your best friend’s wedding, sometimes we have obligations that we cannot get around. It is very important for you to be up front about the situation from the beginning. In most cases, as long as the company knows, they are willing to work around it if they think you are the right candidate for the job. Problems start to arise, however, when you don’t say anything and they find out last minute. What you don’t want to happen is start your new job, then walk into your new boss’s office and tell him that next week you are taking a couple days off for a trip you had booked 5 months ago. It is not a good way to start off your new job and does not make a good impression. If you are clear about it up front and let them know there is no way to get around your obligations, it makes life for you and your new company much easier. They know what they are getting into before they make the offer and there are no surprises.
Sometimes it is hard to know what to do in a situation when you have prior obligations but are switching jobs at the same time. Again, being open and honest is the best way to go. Most employers are willing to work around minor scheduling conflicts if you are the right fit for the job and the company.
