The world of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) has expanded rapidly over the past decade, offering a plethora of options for businesses seeking to automate their processes. With the abundance of choices, it is crucial to be well-informed as you select the best-suited RPA tool for your organization. This blog presents an RPA tool comparison of Automation Anywhere, Blue Prism, UiPath and Power Automate. Having hands-on experience with each tool, UDig has identified their strengths and limitations in hopes of better informing RPA users.

Disclaimer: Before we delve into the RPA tools comparison, it is essential to acknowledge that the following insights are based on our research, hands-on demos, and evaluation tailored to the specific needs of our clients. Every organization’s requirements, experiences, and opinions may vary.

In this article, we will cover:

UiPath

As of writing this, Gartner ranks UiPath as the leading RPA software available. UiPath has the functionality to handle almost any automation solution you can throw at it while still being easy to scale and manage. UiPath also has a user interface that developers seem to like. The tool does require a higher level of technical experience than other automation tools. However, they do an excellent job of providing the training needed on their website.

Another thing UiPath does well that is helpful for developers is community support. The community forum and abundant online resources help users build and troubleshoot automations. As for the cost, UiPath is not as affordable as Power Automate but also not as expensive as Blue Prism. This tool is comparable to Automation Anywhere in that aspect. UiPath is a strong tool with clear vision and direction as a company.

RPA Comparison - UiPath

Automation Anywhere

Automation Anywhere offers a user-friendly and intuitive interface, making it accessible for non-technical users. Because Automation Anywhere does not require the same level of programing knowledge as a UiPath for example, bots can be developed by business users. With advanced encryption and access controls, Automation Anywhere prioritizes data security and compliance. The tool can handle complex and large-scale automation, making it suitable for enterprises of all sizes.

Automation Anywhere’s IQ Bot allows for intelligent document processing, enhancing the tool’s versatility. Automation Anywhere also offers a full cloud development platform meaning you can develop bots from a web browser without needing to download a local client. However, much like UiPath in this RPA tool comparison, the comprehensive features come at a higher price point, making it more suitable for larger organizations with ample budgets and a focus on citizen developer programs.

Blue Prism

Blue Prism has established itself as one of the top 3 RPA leaders, recognized by Gartner. Like many of the other top players, Blue Prism offers high-level security and data encryption. Blue Prism has a visually appealing interface that is user-friendly and easy to understand, which can be used by non-technical staff. Blue Prism’s development interface resembles creating process maps which can help users who are process oriented pick-up development more quickly. Blue Prism does require more programing knowledge than Automation Anywhere, but not as much as UiPath.

One downside to Blue Prism is the lack of community support. Unlike some other RPA tools, Blue Prism’s community support is not as strong, which might make problem-solving more difficult for new or less experienced users. Though Blue Prism has many strengths, one of the biggest downsides to this tool is the cost. Blue Prism has often been considered one of the more expensive RPA solutions. For many companies this can be a deal breaker.

Pros & Cons - Blue Prism

Power Automate

Our last product in this RPA tools comparison is Power Automate, the newest RPA tool being covered in this blog. Being a Microsoft product, Power Automate provides seamless integration with the Microsoft Ecosystem. This means it plays well with Microsoft Office 365, SharePoint, and other Microsoft services. The tool’s low-code interface enables non-developers to create automated workflows easily. It is one of the simpler development experiences of any RPA tool.

Power Automate is also more cost effective compared to other RPA platforms. This low cost does come with tradeoffs though, namely: limited complexity. Power Automate has limitations in handling complex automation scenarios. But this is an acceptable tradeoff for many companies with smaller budgets. Also, the tool is not suitable for non-Microsoft environments. While it excels in the Microsoft ecosystem, integration with non-Microsoft platforms is more challenging. One final note on Power Automate is that the tool seems to be updated quickly and often. Expanded functionality is being added regularly, so it is possible the limited complexity concerns could quickly be erased.
