Digging In with Greg Valentine

Digging In with Greg Valentine
Back to insights

Digging In is a regular series of blog posts profiling UDig employees.  We hope this series helps you to get to know our team and understand why we dig what we do!

UDig: Tell us a little bit about your background and your role at UDig.

GV: I’ve been at UDig my entire career.  After graduating from VCU, I started in the Richmond office and 3 years later had the opportunity to return home to Northern Virginia and help build our presence in the NOVA market.

It’s been exciting to see UDig evolve and I’ve really enjoyed how we’ve transitioned the business over the last few years.  I get to have deeper, more meaningful conversations. What we are doing is innovative and different, providing more opportunities to help people grow and do what they dig.

UDig: What does Do What You Dig mean to you?

GV: It really boils down to 2 things for me:

  1. Enjoy what you do
  2. Add value

Everyone wants to get up in the morning excited to go to work.  And, feel satisfied that the work they do is meaningful.  I love that I get to do both by helping technologists take the next step in their career.

UDig: What is the best career advice you ever received?

GV: “Enjoy your job, because you spend 40+ hours a week doing it.” I not only enjoy my job but I love the people I work with.  UDig is more than a job, the culture is more of a family which you can tell by the long tenure of so many of our team.  We want everyone to be successful and enjoy what they do.

UDig: What is your favorite online procrastination tool?

GV:  It used to be online poker!  However, as a dad with young kids today it’s more Snapchat and Instagram, staying connected to friends and family.

UDig: What is the most played song in your library?

GV:  I’m a big fan of rap and hip and hop but the most played song right now is Sorry by Justin Bieber, my son loves it!

UDig: What did you want to be when you grew up?

GV:  When I was young I thought I wanted to be a Vet, but that was too much school for me!

UDig: You’ve been told you are not allowed to work tomorrow, how do you spend your day?

GV:  A great day would include playing with my sons, getting in 18 holes with friends, dinner with my beautiful wife and family, and fitting in a poker session at a casino.
