UDig assisted a court system with assessing their technical architecture and migration plans to replace IBM Informix. The client can now confidently move forward with the Informix to PostgreSQL migration. With the help of UDig consultants, they will migrate to PostgreSQL and save more than $1M in licensing costs over the following five years.
Our client has been using IBM Informix databases for 20 years to store and manage official court documents. Due to high and increasing licensing costs, they were considering modernizing their Enterprise Architecture by migrating from Informix to an open sourced solution.
Prior to performing any large scale migration efforts, our client engaged UDig to perform an assessment on the overall migration feasibility, business environment and risks, and the recent PostgreSQL proof of concept (POC) completed by our client’s developers.
UDig conducted stakeholder interviews to get a full understanding of the business requirements, risks and concerns, and the POC lessons learned. Additionally, UDig performed further industry research on other Open Source solutions that could serve as viable alternatives to Informix.
UDig consultants delivered interview summaries, POC analysis and a technical solution recommendation. Based on the research conducted, a roadmap was developed recommending the selection and implementation of PostgreSQL. The roadmap consists of migration rationalization, project timeline with recommended activities and a risk analysis addressing potential challenges.
