Ever wondered what a day in the life of one of our consultants looks like? This series dives into the details! Today, we’re spotlighting Connor Dolan, an AI Consultant based in Richmond, VA. Here’s a glimpse into their typical day.
I’m definitely a morning person. I like to get up early, have a small breakfast snack, and head to the gym before it gets too crowded. I’m usually back home by 7 a.m. If I’ve got time—and a book I’m really into—I’ll read or watch a bit of TV until it’s time to log on around 8:30.
I’m based about two hours from UDig’s Richmond office, so I work remotely most of the time, but I love going in when I can. I’ve got a solid home setup that works well for heads-down development, but I also really value the in-person connection.
Each workday starts with a little prep—reviewing what I did the day before, organizing tasks, and getting ready for our daily standup. What I appreciate about UDig is that if you’re in a meeting, it’s because your voice matters. I’ve always felt comfortable speaking up and sharing ideas, especially when it’s an area I’ve been deeply working in.
I’m currently working on a project where we’re using AI to document over 600 different system integrations. These integrations are costing our client a lot, so our goal is to document what’s in place and create a roadmap to migrate to a more efficient system. I’m on a small team for this one—a Principal Consultant, a Senior Consultant, and me—which has been a shift from my last project where I was mostly solo.
Lunchtime varies depending on where I’m working. If I’m in the office, I’ll usually grab something from Roots and eat with the team. It’s a great way to connect and reset midday. When I’m home, I tend to eat solo—sometimes I’ll read, or use that time to work on internal projects.
During the development of our Agentic AI Lunch + Learn, I was actually using lunch breaks to fine-tune content and prep materials. It was a great way to explore new ideas and build something useful for the team while also growing my own skills.
Afternoons are when I get into deep focus mode. With most meetings out of the way, I put on some music and dive into development. On this project, a big part of my work is reverse engineering a huge, complex code base. We’re trying to figure out how to extract key data, find the right APIs and triggers, and see how we can apply AI to do it more efficiently.
Around 2 or 3 p.m., I usually take a break for a walk, especially when I’m working from home. It helps me reset, clear my head, and come back focused for the rest of the day.
Once I’ve reset for the afternoon, I’m often always looking for ways to level-up. I used UDig’s training budget earlier this year to take the Azure AI Engineer certification exam and get access to the prep materials. Beyond certifications, I’ve recently worked on internal tools like SalesGenie and Agentic AI—projects that aren’t client-facing but really help build technical depth. I’ve also learned a lot from our bi-weekly Lunch + Learns, and I’ve worked with our VP of Employee Success on developing my consulting skills and identifying areas where I can keep improving.
I usually wrap up around 5 p.m. and head straight into making dinner with my fiancée. We try to keep a few weekly rituals—Thursday night trivia is a favorite, along with evening walks or relaxing with a movie or show.
One of the things that excites me about getting back to work the next morning is that at UDig, we’re always trying to stay ahead of the curve. I’ve been in environments where the tech stack stays the same just because it works. At UDig, we’re constantly asking, What’s next? That energy is contagious, and I love being part of a team that’s exploring new ideas and helping clients do the same.
